38 – Truth

TRUTH

§ 38. God is truth, inasmuch as He really is as He manifests Himself,1 wills what He professes to will,2 and does what He has promised to do,3 His works being in full agreement with His words.4

1. God is truth, inasmuch as He really is as He manifests Himself,

Jeremiah 10:10–11 But the Lord is the true God, He is the living God, and an everlasting king: at His wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide His indignation. Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.

John 5:18–21 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill Him, because He not only had broken the Sabbath, but said also that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God. Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He seeth the Father do: for what things soever He doeth; these also doeth the Son likewise. For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth Him all things that Himself doeth: and He will shew Him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom He will.

Romans 3:3–4 For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That Thou mightest be justified in Thy sayings, and mightest overcome when Thou art judged.

II Timothy 2:13 If we believe not, yet He abideth faithful: He cannot deny Himself.

2. wills what He professes to will,

II Samuel 7:28 And now, O Lord God, Thou art that God, and Thy words be true, and Thou hast promised this goodness unto Thy servant.

Psalm 25:10 All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth unto such as keep His covenant and His testimonies.

Numbers 23:19 God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent: hath He said, and shall He not do it? or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?

I Samuel 15:29 And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for He is not a man, that He should repent.

Hebrews 6:17–18 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath: that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us.

3. and does what He has promised to do,

Titus 1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.

Psalm 146:6 Which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is: which keepeth truth for ever.

4. His works being in full agreement with His words.

Numbers 23:19 Hath He said, and shall He not do it? or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?

Psalm 33:4 For the Word of the Lord is right; and all His works are done in truth.
