114 – Burial of Christ
BURIAL OF CHRIST
§ 114. The burial of Christ, His body being laid in Joseph’s sepulchre,1 while His soul was in paradise, 2 was a manifest confirmation of His death and its continuation to the third day, 3 during which time, however, corruption did not touch His body.4
1. The burial of Christ, His body being laid in Joseph’s sepulchre
Matthew 27:58–60 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.
Luke 23:55 And the women also, which came with Him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how His body was laid.
John 19:38, 41–42 (38. Joseph asks for the body.) (41, 42) Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.
I Corinthians 15:4 And that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.
2. while His soul was in paradise
Luke 23:43 Verily I say unto thee, To-day shalt thou be with Me in paradise.
3. was a manifest confirmation of His death and its continuation to the third day
Matthew 27:64–66 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest His disciples come by night, and steal Him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first. Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can. So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.
4. during which time, however, corruption did not touch His body
Psalm 16:10 For Thou wilt not leave My soul in hell; neither wilt Thou suffer Thine Holy One to see corruption.
Acts 2:27 ff. (Psalm 16:10 quoted and expounded.)
