181 – Resurrection of all the Dead


 RESURRECTION OF ALL THE DEAD
  § 181. The first 1 act of Christ on His second advent 2 and of the Holy Trinity, 3 at the last day, 4 will be the quickening or resuscitation of all the dead, 5 whose souls will then be reunited with the same 6 bodies from which they were separated in temporal death, 7 but which will be adapted to a future state, 8 those of the wicked to a state of everlasting shame and torment, 9 those of the righteous to an everlasting state of celestial glory. 10

1. The first act of Christ…

  I Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first.

  I Corinthians 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

  Matthew 25:31–32 When the Son of Man shall come in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then shall He sit upon the throne of His glory: and before Him shall be gathered all nations.


3. …and of the Holy Trinity

  John 5:21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom He will.

  John 6:40, 54 And this is the will of Him that sent Me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on Him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise Him up at the last day. (54) Whoso eateth My flesh, and drinketh My blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise Him up at the last day.

  Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you.


4. …at the last day,

  John 6:40, 54 And this is the will of Him that sent Me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on Him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise Him up at the last day. (54) Whoso eateth My flesh, and drinketh My blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise Him up at the last day.


5. …will be the quickening or resuscitation of all the dead,

  John 5:28–29 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear His voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

  Matthew 25:32 And before Him shall be gathered all nations: and He shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats.

  II Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

  Acts 24:15 And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.


6. …whose souls will then be reunited with the same bodies

  Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you.

  Philippians 3:21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto His glorious body, according to the working whereby He is able even to subdue all things unto Himself.

  II Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

  Job 19:26 Yet in my flesh shall I see God.

  I Corinthians 15:44, 53 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. (53) For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

  Revelation 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.


7. …bodies from which they were separated in temporal death,

8. …but which will be adapted to a future state,

  John 5:29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

  I Corinthians 15:50 Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.


9. those of the wicked to a state of everlasting shame and torment,

  Daniel 12:2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

  Matthew 25:41, 46 Then shall He say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from Me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. (46) And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

  John 5:29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.


10. …those of the righteous to an everlasting state of celestial glory.

  Daniel 12:1–2 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of Thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time Thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. (49–50) And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly. Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
