77 – First Commandment


FIRST COMMANDMENT

§ 77. The law condemns all who have other gods before the true God,1 especially those who are ignorant of or deny the true God,2 or who do not fear,3 love,4 or trust in5 God above all things, or who worship a creature as God,6 or fear, love, or trust in a creature as we should fear, love, or trust in God alone.7


1. The law condemns all who have other gods before the true God,

Exodus 20:2 I am the Lord thy God.

Deuteronomy 5:7 Thou shalt have none other gods before Me.


2. especially those who are ignorant of or deny the true God,

John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent.

Jeremiah 9:23–24 Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth Me, that I am the Lord.

Psalm 14:1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

I John 2:23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: but he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.

Psalm 33:8 Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.

Genesis 39:9 How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?

Deuteronomy 10:20 Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God; Him shalt thou serve, and to Him shalt thou cleave.

Psalm 67:7 God shall bless us; and all the ends of the earth shall fear Him.

Psalm 147:11 The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear Him.

Ecclesiastes 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

Isaiah 26:4 Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength.

Jeremiah 17:5, 7 Thus saith the Lord, Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord. (7) Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is.

Psalm 146:5 Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God.

Psalm 147:11 The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear Him, in those that hope in His mercy.


6. God above all things, or who worship a creature as God,

Matthew 4:10 Thou shalt worship the Lord Thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve.

Isaiah 42:8 I am the Lord: that is My name: and My glory will I not give to another, neither My praise to graven images.

Revelation 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellow servant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God.


7. or fear, love, or trust in a creature as we should fear, love, or trust in God alone.

Matthew 10:28 Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear Him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Matthew 10:37 He that loveth father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.

Psalm 62:11 God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.

Colossians 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
