FALL OF MAN

§ 72. Before the conception of their first offspring,1 our first parents, Eve tempted by Satan,2 and Adam, voluntarily transgressed a commandment of God,3 and by this sin they fell from their primeval state,4 lost the image of God,5 became entirely depraved in spiritual death6 and obnoxious to temporal death7 and eternal damnation.8


1. Before the conception of their first offspring,

Genesis 4:1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a Man from the Lord.


2. our first parents, Eve tempted by Satan,

Genesis 3:13 And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. Cf. Genesis 3:1–6.

Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world.

I Timothy 2:14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.


3. and Adam, voluntarily transgressed a commandment of God,

Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. Cf. Genesis 2: 17; 3:2–3.

Romans 5:19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of One shall many be made righteous.

Romans 5:12 By one man sin entered into the world.


4. and by this sin they fell from their primeval state,

Genesis 3:7–10 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard Thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.


5. lost the image of God,

Genesis 3:10 And he said, I heard Thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked: and I hid myself.

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.


6. became entirely depraved in spiritual death

Genesis 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Romans 5:16 For the judgment was by one to condemnation.

Ephesians 2:1, 3 And you hath He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins. (3) Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.


7. and obnoxious to temporal death

Genesis 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death.


8. and eternal damnation.

Romans 5:18 Therefore, as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation.
