75 – State of Wrath


STATE OF WRATH

 § 75. Inasmuch as God neither was the cause of Adam’s sin,1 nor is the cause of man’s original sin or actual sins,2 nor of his inability to work his own regeneration,3 all the children of Adam are, as their ancestor was, in consequence of the fall, justly under the wrath of God and deserving of temporal and eternal punishment.4


1. Inasmuch as God neither was the cause of Adam’s sin,

Genesis 1:31 And God saw every thing that He had made, and, behold, it was very good.

Genesis 2:16–17 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Genesis 3:12, 17 And the man said, The woman whom Thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. (17) And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life.


2. nor is the cause of man’s original sin or actual sins,

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.

John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

3. nor of his inability to work his own regeneration,

Ephesians 2:1–3 And you hath He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

John 3:5–6 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Galatians 6:8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
