WISDOM

§ 34. Wisdom is that attribute of God by which He devises, disposes and directs the proper means to proper ends,1 an attribute exhibited chiefly in the plan of creation2 and in the plan of salvation.3

1. Wisdom is that attribute of God by which He devises, disposes and directs the proper means to proper ends,

Job 12:13 With Him is wisdom and strength, He hath counsel and understanding.

I Timothy 1:17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Isaiah 40:13 Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or being His counselor hath taught Him? With whom took He counsel, and who instructed Him, and taught Him in the path of judgment, and taught Him knowledge, and shewed to Him the way of understanding?

Isaiah 46:9–10 I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure.

Isaiah 55:8,9 My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.

2. an attribute exhibited chiefly in the plan of creation

Psalm 104:24 O Lord, how manifold are Thy works! in wisdom hast Thou made them all: the earth is full of Thy riches.

Job 28:20–27 Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding? … God understandeth the way thereof, and He knoweth the place thereof. For He looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven; to make the weight for the winds; and He weigheth the waters by measure. When He made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder: then did He see it, and declare it; He prepared it, yea, and searched it out.

3. and in the plan of salvation.

Ephesians 1:7–8 In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace; wherein He hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence.

Ephesians 3:10–11 That now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, according to the eternal purpose which He purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 11:33–36 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments, and His ways past finding out. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, or who hath been His counselor… For of Him, and through Him, and to Him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.
