134 – The Sacraments in General


THE SACRAMENTS IN GENERAL
  § 134. The sacraments are sacred acts 1 of divine institution,2 in which, wherever they are properly administered 3 by the use of the prescribed external elements 4 in conjunction with the divine words of institution,5 God is, in a manner peculiar to each sacrament, present with the Word and elements,6 earnestly offers to all who partake of the sacrament 7 forgiveness of sins 8 and eternal salvation,9 and operates toward the acceptance of these blessings, or toward greater assurance of their possession.10

7. …earnestly offers to all who partake of the sacrament

8. …forgiveness of sins

  Acts 21:16 And now why tarriest thou? Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

  Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

  Luke 3:3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

9. …and eternal salvation,

  I Peter 3:21 The like figure whereunto even Baptism doth also now save us.

  Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.
