119 – Christ’s Ascension into Heaven


CHRIST’S ASCENSION INTO HEAVEN

§ 119. Christ’s ascension into heaven was the glorious termination of His visible conversation with His church on earth 1 and the visible 2 entrance of the God-man,3 according to His human nature,4 into His heavenly kingdom,5 in which, while He is ever and everywhere present with His church on earth,6 He is being worshiped and adored in His glory by the heavenly host.7

  Luke 24:51 And it came to pass, while He blessed them, He was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.

  Acts 1:11 Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into heaven.


2. and the visible

Acts 1:9–11 And when He had spoken these things, while they beheld, He was taken up; and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into heaven.


3. entrance of the God-man

  Mark 16:19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, He was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

  Psalm 47:5 God is gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.

  John 3:13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but He that came down from heaven, even the Son of Man which is in heaven.


4. .according to His human nature

  Acts 1:11 This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into heaven.


5. into His heavenly kingdom

  Mark 16:19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, He was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

  Ephesians 4:10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that He might fill all things.

  John 17:24 Father, I will that they also, whom Thou hast given Me, be with Me where I am; that they may behold My glory, which Thou hast given Me.

  II Timothy 4:18 And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto His heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.


6. in which, while He is ever and everywhere present with His church on earth

  Matthew 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them.

  Matthew 28:20 Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.


7. .He is being worshiped and adored in His glory by the heavenly host.

  Matthew 25:31 When the Son of Man shall come in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then shall He sit upon the throne of His glory.

  Revelation 5:6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain.
