Devotion

Who of God is made unto us . . . Righteousness. – 1 Corinthians 1:30.

In ourselves we have no righteousness whereby we might stand before God. But Christ is made Righteousness to us by God. We must say: Considering myself, I confess that I am all unrighteousness; but Christ is my Righteousness. God has made Christ our Righteousness. How are we to understand this? Christ is for us; He is our Substitute. Christ has fulfilled the Law of God perfectly – for us. Christ, though He knew no sin, nevertheless was made sin by God for us. (2 Corinthians 5:21.) On Christ lay all the chastisement for sin – for us. (Isaiah 53:5.) Christ did all that the Law of God demands of us – for us. Christ suffered all with which the Law of God threatens us – for us. Christ fulfilled all the righteousness demanded by the Law of God-for us. God did this in His great mercy. So Christ was made Righteousness unto us by God. So Christ is our Righteousness. A blessed exchange was made: Christ was made sin for us, we are made the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Corinthians 5:21.) Surely, the righteousness of Christ is valid before God, and the righteousness of Christ belongs to us. You must firmly believe, my dear Christian, that the righteousness wherewith you may stand in the sight of God is not your own, but that of another – the righteousness of Christ. This God gives to you; it belongs to you; you must apprehend it in true faith. Thus you may stand before God. Thus all Your sins are taken away from you and gone; they are forgiven you for Christ’s sake, and pure righteousness, spotless, blameless, perfect righteousness, envelopes you, as it were, the righteousness of Christ. If you firmly apprehend this in true faith, you will nevermore fear nor despair. Then you at all times possess that perfect righteousness wherewith you may stand before God.

PRAYER. – O God, how graciously did Thou help me: Thou did make Christ Righteousness to me. Christ is my jewel, Christ is my glorious dress, Christ is the robe of my righteousness. Grant that through the gracious operation of Thy Holy Spirit I may put on Christ, by believing in Him, and wrap myself in Christ, and hide myself in Him. And for Christ’s sake, O righteous God, declare me, a sinner, righteous! Amen.

Christ, Thou art the sole oblation
That I’ll bring before my God;
In His sight I’ve acceptation
Only Through Thy streaming blood.
Immaculate righteousness I have acquired,
Since Thou on the tree of the cross hast expired;
The robe of salvation for ever is mine,
In this shall my faith through eternity shine.

Bible Readings

MORNING:

1 Corinthians 15:58-16:24
58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
16:1 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye.2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.3 And when I come, whomsoever ye shall approve by your letters, them will I send to bring your liberality unto Jerusalem. 4 And if it be meet that I go also, they shall go with me.5 Now I will come unto you, when I shall pass through Macedonia: for I do pass through Macedonia.6 And it may be that I will abide, yea, and winter with you, that ye may bring me on my journey whithersoever I go.7 For I will not see you now by the way; but I trust to tarry a while with you, if the Lord permit.8 But I will tarry at Ephesus until Pentecost.9 For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries.10 Now if Timotheus come, see that he may be with you without fear: for he worketh the work of the Lord, as I also do.11 Let no man therefore despise him: but conduct him forth in peace, that he may come unto me: for I look for him with the brethren.12 As touching our brother Apollos, I greatly desired him to come unto you with the brethren: but his will was not at all to come at this time; but he will come when he shall have convenient time.13 Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.14 Let all your things be done with charity.15 I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,)16 That ye submit yourselves unto such, and to every one that helpeth with us, and laboureth.17 I am glad of the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus: for that which was lacking on your part they have supplied.18 For they have refreshed my spirit and yours: therefore acknowledge ye them that are such.19 The churches of Asia salute you. Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in the Lord, with the church that is in their house.20 All the brethren greet you. Greet ye one another with an holy kiss.21 The salutation of me Paul with mine own hand.22 If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha.23 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.24 My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.

EVENING:

1 Chronicles 22:1-19

22:1 Then David said, This is the house of the LORD God, and this is the altar of the burnt offering for Israel.2 And David commanded to gather together the strangers that were in the land of Israel; and he set masons to hew wrought stones to build the house of God.3 And David prepared iron in abundance for the nails for the doors of the gates, and for the joinings; and brass in abundance without weight;4 Also cedar trees in abundance: for the Zidonians and they of Tyre brought much cedar wood to David.5 And David said, Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be builded for the LORD must be exceeding magnifical, of fame and of glory throughout all countries: I will therefore now make preparation for it. So David prepared abundantly before his death.6 Then he called for Solomon his son, and charged him to build an house for the LORD God of Israel.7 And David said to Solomon, My son, as for me, it was in my mind to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God:8 But the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made great wars: thou shalt not build an house unto my name, because thou hast shed much blood upon the earth in my sight.9 Behold, a son shall be born to thee, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about: for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his days. 10 He shall build an house for my name; and he shall be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever.11 Now, my son, the LORD be with thee; and prosper thou, and build the house of the LORD thy God, as he hath said of thee.12 Only the LORD give thee wisdom and understanding, and give thee charge concerning Israel, that thou mayest keep the law of the LORD thy God.13 Then shalt thou prosper, if thou takest heed to fulfil the statutes and judgments which the LORD charged Moses with concerning Israel: be strong, and of good courage; dread not, nor be dismayed.14 Now, behold, in my trouble I have prepared for the house of the LORD an hundred thousand talents of gold, and a thousand thousand talents of silver; and of brass and iron without weight; for it is in abundance: timber also and stone have I prepared; and thou mayest add thereto. 15 Moreover there are workmen with thee in abundance, hewers and workers of stone and timber, and all manner of cunning men for every manner of work. 16 Of the gold, the silver, and the brass, and the iron, there is no number. Arise therefore, and be doing, and the LORD be with thee.17 David also commanded all the princes of Israel to help Solomon his son, saying,18 Is not the LORD your God with you? and hath he not given you rest on every side? for he hath given the inhabitants of the land into mine hand; and the land is subdued before the LORD, and before his people.19 Now set your heart and your soul to seek the LORD your God; arise therefore, and build ye the sanctuary of the LORD God, to bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and the holy vessels of God, into the house that is to be built to the name of the LORD.
