Tenth Sunday after Trinity – Wednesday

Be careful for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God. – Philippians 4:6.

What should we ask for in our prayers?  Dear Christian, do you not see what God says?  Instead of fretting and worrying, make your requests known to God in everything by prayer and supplication, thanking Him with all your heart for being your gracious God, who desires your prayers.  Ask God for everything in prayer.  Nothing is excepted.  You may ask God for the very greatest of things.  Nothing is too great for Him to give.  And, you may ask God for the most trifling things.  Nothing is, too small or trifling for your dear, loving heavenly Father to consider.

Above all things, however, ask God for the continuing great and glorious spiritual blessings which are necessary for your spiritual welfare, for your eternal salvation.  Every Christian knows that this is of prime importance.  Also, ask God for the temporal blessings that are necessary for the preservation of this life.  But, you must act as a loving child of God should, and not in presumptuous ignorance and selfishness ask God for things that conflict with His glory and also conflict with your own temporal and spiritual welfare.  Jesus said: “What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them” (Mark 11:24).  But, can you truly believe that God will give you something that would not promote His divine glory, nor your own temporal and spiritual welfare?  God’s glory is advanced only when He gives us really good gifts.

 O Christian, be careful, be worried for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.  But always retain a childlike mind, which firmly believes that God, “according to His will” (I John 5:14), knows best what is truly “good” (Romans 8:28) and right for you.

PRAYER – I thank Thee, my dear heavenly Father, that, through the gracious promise Thou hast given, Thou rid me of each and every care, of each and every worry, and keep reminding me to call on Thee, and to trust that Thou, according to Thy revealed will, wilt give me what is best for me in time and eternity.  Continue to give to me, O kind Father, the Spirit of adoption, working through Thy Word of truth, that I may ever more confidently and joyfully entrust my life entirely to Thee, always looking up to Thee, always calling on Thee, for Thou art my most gracious God through Jesus Christ, my Savior. Amen.

What a Friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear;

what a privilege to carry, everything to God in prayer!

Oh, what peace we often forfeit; oh, what needless pain we bear;

 all because we do not carry, everything to God in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care?

Precious Savior, still our Refuge; take it to the Lord in prayer!

Do thy friends despise, forsake thee; take it to the Lord in prayer;

in His arms He’ll take and shield thee; thou wilt find a solace there.

(Hymn 457, st. 1 and 3; TLH)
